Dehumidifiers for cool spaces
What to buy for a cold basement or crawl — continuous drain, auto-defrost, and why it is not a water fix.
A dehumidifier is a drying tool, not a waterproofing system. Fix gutters, grade, and obvious leaks first.
Cool basements and crawls need units that handle lower temperatures. Auto-defrost matters when coils can ice. Continuous drain (hose or pump) beats daily bucket duty.
Size for the space and the dampness level. An undersized unit runs constantly and still loses. Set a target humidity and let the humidistat cycle the machine.
If water is actively entering, you will fill tanks or overwhelm drainage. Stop and solve the water path before treating the machine as the main strategy.
