Roofs & moss

Moss, wind-driven rain, and the maintenance that keeps a Lower Mainland roof from failing early.

Coastal roofs stay damp under trees and on north slopes. Moss holds water against shingles and can lift edges over time.

Gentle removal and zinc or copper strips are common maintenance steps. Aggressive scraping can damage aging asphalt. If the roof is near end of life, money may be better spent on replacement planning.

Valleys, flashing, and clogged gutters matter as much as moss. Water that leaves the roof and sits at the foundation becomes a basement problem.

Work from the ground when possible. Ladder safety is part of the job on wet, mossy surfaces.

Educational only — not a contractor inspection or bid. When work is structural, electrical, or involves unknown vent chases, hire a qualified local trade.
