Moss on BC roofs

Why coastal roofs green up, what moss does to shingles and valleys, and what removal can and cannot solve.

Shade, mild winters, and constant damp let moss colonize asphalt and cedar. It is not only cosmetic: mats hold water and can lift shingle edges.

Removal methods vary in aggressiveness. Soft approaches and metal ion strips are common; harsh scraping on brittle shingles can shorten roof life.

Moss in valleys and against walls deserves attention because water is already concentrating there. Keep gutters downstream clear so removed debris does not create a second problem.

If granules are mostly gone and shingles are curling, maintenance is triage. Plan replacement on a realistic timeline instead of endless cosmetic cleaning.

Educational only — not a contractor inspection or bid. When work is structural, electrical, or involves unknown vent chases, hire a qualified local trade.
